Hack for Western Mass for 2015

Thank you for participating in Hack for Western Mass in 2013 or 2014! We hope you had a fun and meaningful experience, and would like to invite you to join us again. This year, we plan to be in the beautiful UMass Center at Springfield on the same dates (June 6 and 7). We’re making a few other changes this year as well.

We are trying to start earlier and we want to organize local teams in advance of the Hackathon. We believe this will help challenges to hit the ground running when the hackathon starts — and to provide greater continuity for our community partners after the event.

Hackathon 2014 Report

Having a Youth Hackathon at Hack for Western Mass means that parents can join us for the entire weekend. But more importantly, it will develop a culture of civic hacking and show people that they can make a difference.

Background

Girls Inc. of Holyoke inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold by providing them the opportunity to develop and achieve their full potential. The STEM group at Girls Inc has been learning about hackathons, data, and visually presenting ideas. As part of this exploration, they watched the famous Hans Rosling 200, 200 Years, 4 Minutes video.

Great Weekend at the Hackathon

When I signed up for Hack for Western Mass, I was not entirely sure if I would be useful here. Despite not being able to do anything more complicated that trial by error html tweaks on preexisting sites, I showed up to do whatever I could to help. I loved the Seed Swap Database challenge and joined up with Rosemary, Beryl, and Lou to work on a virtual seed library for the beautiful Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts.
